Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team could be building a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
