An Kindness of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Secure the Job That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Since my friend was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had arranged a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a big multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the dining hall, where we got some food, found a table, and began chatting with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I did, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – close to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that night. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately explained to my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she said: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his identity, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the confidence or self-assurance to reach out at an prestigious college and seek a position. Moreover, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that job in New York led me to a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
